MIAMI-DADE GREEN CALLS FOR IMPEACHMENT OF GEORGE BUSH AND DICK CHENEY
MIAMI, FLORIDA, APRIL 28, 2007 – The Miami-Dade Green Party along with other Florida Greens joined an estimated 700-800 flag-waving, chanting, sign-carrying people who lined the streets in front of the Kendall campus of Miami-Dade College this Saturday in an UNwelcoming Ceremony for the nation's chief executive, George Bush, who had been asked to speak to the graduating class. The main theme and rallying cry for the day, along with calls to end the occupation in Iraq, were resounding calls for the impeachment of the nation's two highest officials for high crimes and misdemeanors.
In the week leading up to this demonstration of dissatisfaction with the Bush Administration and its policies, hundreds of people signed petitions and wrote to the Miami-Dade College Board of Trustees to change the graduation speaker to someone more appropriately qualified to discuss the future of its graduating students.
The Green Party asks why the College dishonors its graduates and our entire community by offering this honor to a man who has defied and defiled the rules of law and civility both in the U.S. and abroad? We feel it should be unnecessary to point out the contradiction of having a "proud C student" with difficulty articulating complex thoughts, address the graduating class of an admirable academic institution.
We ask the Miami-Dade College community what lessons can he teach these graduates?
* That if you are born into privilege you can become anything you want?
* That if you control the world's largest military, you can impose any policy you desire without dialog with other nations?
* That if you claim to have won 49-51% of the votes (which the Green Party seriously disputes) you can ignore the rest of the nation?
Today's large and loud demonstration was received with equally loud and resounding support from a large portion of the cars passing in front of the College. Layers and layers of horns in long or staccato beeps and blasts accompanied waves and thumbs up by pleased passers-by. The Green Party feels this is just the beginning of the turning of the public tide away from this Administrations' dismal policies and from their many attempts to alter the balance of power and to curtail our liberties.
There is a growing sense of the need for impeachment as this Administration continues to dishonor our nation by sending and re-sending our troops, under-prepared, into an unnecessary and illegal conflict of choice, gravely compounded by allowing the returning wounded to languish in under-resourced medical facilities. This same Administration has further sought diligently to hide the real human cost of this invasion and occupation by not showing nor mentioning those who have lost their lives in this misadventure, all the while enriching the coffers of politically connected private companies with no-bid war contracts.
Those pained and outraged citizens who, exasperated, lined the streets at Miami-Dade College today, along with countless thousands gathered in rallies and demonstrations around the United States for A28, as the April 28 National Impeachment Day is known, are serious in their calling for the appropriate Constitutional remedy for such national disregard and malfeasance -- impeachment.
Of all the public activities on "A28", only the one in Miami-Dade county was the site where a visiting George W. Bush, even from the comfortable distance of his motorcade, might have gotten a glimpse and a taste of the nation's mood, and of what the rest of his tenure might look like.
