Most of them were black. Ian Inaba's intelligent and provocative documentary American Blackout will be presented Saturday, January 19, 7:00pm at Cinema Paradiso in Ft. Lauderdale. American Blackout chronicles the recurring patterns of voter disenfranchisement from Florida 2000 to Ohio 2004 while following the story of former six-term Democratic Congresswoman from Georgia, Cynthia McKinney. The LA Weekly calls American Blackout "one of the most important political docs of the last several years." Inaba reminds us that African Americans have long fought a war inside our country for their right to vote, and unfortunately that war rages on today. American Blackout emotionally revitalizes the core of our power as American citizensthe right to voteand effectively reveals that the fate of black voters is inextricably tied to the fate of all Americans. McKinney, now seeking Green Party Presidential nomination, will be here at this special screening in Florida (where the first blows to our democracy took place) to discuss with the audience the continuing impact of these anti-democratic practices on our lives and how we can become involved in changing that. Congresswoman McKinney's own political life and decisions are just one the outcomes of these inequitable and unresolved conditions. Indeed the congresswoman is a candidate today because the political practices eviscerating our political landscape since 2000 have not been addressed significantly since then, to the peril of our communities, The electoral inequities and distortions critically hampering our society's ability to decide its destiny and to deal with the world's nations, also determine how we react (or not) to crises and recurrent common needs such as Katrina and the lack of affordable healthcare..... Join us for an all-too-rare public scrutiny of one of the most serious problems plaguing our nation today, one which goes to the very heart of the democracy we claim to cherish and defend. This is not being discussed in other "presidential debates". Watching American Blackout may be for many a first step towards removing Voting (and counting the votes) from the endangered species list of democratic practices. The Green Party of Florida and the American Black Caucus proudly presents American Blackout to the Cinema Paradiso audience featuring a special message from Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney. The film also features: Congressional members John Conyers, John Lewis, Stephanie Tubbs-Jones, Bernie Sanders and journalists Greg Palast and Bob Fitrakis. READ film review by Zach Roberts.
